Optional Field Trip on Thursday, June 5th

Kirkjubøur, National Museum and the Áir Whaling Station

We would love for you to join us on this optional field trip to Kirkjubøur village, the national museum of the Faroe Islands as well as the whaling station at Áir.

Kirkjubøur used to be the Faroe Islands’ historical and religious center. It features Roykstovan, a 900-year-old inhabited wooden house, the Magnus Cathedral ruins, and the 13th-century Olav’s Church.

The permanent exhibition at the National Museum offers an experience of the geology, botany, zoology, archeology, folk-life and history of the Faroe Islands.

Among the cultural treasures in the exhibition, you will find the original Faroese rowing boat, the full collection of the legendary 15th century Kirkjubøur benches, a variety of national costumes and interesting findings from the Viking era.

You can also experience a journey through the natural and geological history of the Faroe Islands with its mammal and bird life and the volcanic geological origin of the islands.

The Áir whaling station is the only surviving of the seven total Faroese whaling stations that were established around 1900. It was established in 1905 and is the only station of Norwegian origin that is still standing on the northern hemisphere.

In 1958 the whaling station við Áir stopped operating as a station that produced fish oil, dry fodder for export, and selling whale meat to ships and households in the Faroe Islands. However, it still operated a little in the 1960’s, 1970’s and the final whale was processed at the plant in the early 1980’s.

National Heritage has since Spring 2010 worked at the station by cleaning it up and collecting tools and equipment from the whaling station to preserve for the future.

The Áir whaling station is of great historical and natural historical value, not only for Sundalagið where there were three whaling stations, but to the entire Faroe Islands.

Price per person: DKK 1.190.
