The Summartónar festival
With its focus on composition, the Summartónar festival is a continuous, vital dynamo in the development of Faroese music. The programme reflects its role as a platform for new works by Faroese composers, including several debut performances. In the past few years, Summartónar has also presented improvised music as well as contemporary folk music.
The festival offers a great lineup of unique live experiences, inlcuding amongst many others the special event “Concerto Grotto”. During the last several years, the iconic scooner Norðlýsið (the Northern Light), and Kristian Blak, artistic director of Summartónar, have arranged trips with musicians and audiences to seacaves, into which one can enter in smaller boats, utilizing the natural sounds and unique acoustics of the caves as integral parts of the music. These concerts have taken place in collaboration with Summartónar, which brings visiting musicians in addition to local performers into these unique Faroese concert halls.
Our ship:
The vessel Norðlýsið was built at the Tórshavn Shipyard during World War II as a sail ship with a helping motor. The ship is built from Canadian oak tree which is said to be exceptionally good. It was the second ship produced at this shipyard. The ship was finished and given the first owners 5th of May in 1945, the same day as World War II ended. Norðlýsið was used primarily as a fishing ship a round the Faroes from 1945 until 1980. From 1985 until 1989 the ship was renovated for a more schooner rigging.
The ship has since then focused primarily on tourists, and sail each summer around the islands.
The translation of the Faroese name "Norðlýsið" is "The Northern Light".
